I don’t think anyone envies Job. He was a godly man of great wealth who lost everything, including his children and his health. His suffering is hard to imagine unless you have been through similar situations. Yet, as much pain as he endured, there is one aspect of his life we could envy. After God speaks to Job in the most God-exalting sermon ever, here is Job’s reply: “I had heard of you by the hearing of the ear, but now my eye sees you” (Job 42:5).
Let’s pause on this sentence for a moment. I don’t believe Job physically saw God the way we see each other. God approached him in a whirlwind (Job 38:1), and the entire interaction is God speaking. Yet Job says he went from hearing about God to seeing God. How can this be?
The best answer I can give is that Job went from hearing about God’s sovereignty to embracing it; he went from hearing about God’s mercy to feeling it through his suffering; he heard about God’s love but finally realized its unconditional nature.
This is how God uses our circumstances to communicate with us. His providence takes what we have learned about Him through the Bible and makes those things real in our lives.
Job’s story also helps us see how God uses others. Job had three friends who gave him bad and unhelpful advice. However, God sent Elihu to set the friends and Job straight. Elihu helped Job interpret his suffering and correct his errors about God. It is no coincidence that God shows up right after Elihu, as if Job needed his heart softened by a friend first.
Have you had a similar experience where you went from “hearing about God” to seeing Him at work? I did when we went through the adoption process with our girls. We had a script written for God to follow, and He basically threw it away. He had His own story to write -- which required from us patience, faith, risk, and even some wrestling. But as I see how He orchestrated everything, I have gone from knowing about His good providence to seeing it play out. The road wasn’t easy, which is why He put so many friends in our lives along the way. Through them, we learned to see God at work.
In what ways has God used His providence and people to move you from “hearing about Him” to seeing Him in your life? Maybe you need to consider how He is doing that today. Or just maybe, you need to be the friend who helps someone see God in their life.
