This week we’re visiting the 4th Reality of the Experiencing God study.
We all have different backgrounds. Some were raised in the city, others in the country; some with abundance, others with less; some within the church, others with no religion. As we continue examining the principles of Experiencing God, your church background may have a profound influence on this next principle. It is rather long, but here it is:
God speaks by the Holy Spirit through the Bible, circumstances, and the church to reveal Himself, His purposes, and His ways.
To help us understand why our religious background matters, let me be transparent. I pause when I read that principle as certain words could be misinterpreted. You see, I was raised in a traditional Baptist church. It wasn’t an overly strict church, but the services were orderly; each week you could count on three hymns, special music, the sermon, and an invitation.
I know others who have had very different experiences. In what would be considered more charismatic churches, things were less ordered. I attended a few of these with friends and witnessed songs with no defined end, times of prophecy, and even speaking in tongues.
I bring this up only to highlight how those with a more charismatic background likely read this week’s principle without pause. Considering Immanuel to be very much like my home church on these matters, I have a feeling some of you may relate.
It’s important that this week’s principle is rightly understood. I doubt any evangelical Christian doubts God speaks through the Bible and is active in the lives of His people. The difficulty comes in our understanding of “speaks.” The Bible is clear that God uses various ways to get through to us. He uses other believers to help us discern His will and purpose for our lives. In that sense, He does speak to us through circumstances and the church; but that is different from how He speaks through His Word.
We will get to the nuances of this principle as we move forward. But first, let’s step back in wonder at the first two words:
God speaks. The God of the universe who spoke all creation into existence speaks to us today. He is neither distant nor silent. Through the Holy Spirit, He works in our lives to make Himself known and guide our paths.
This is good news we can all celebrate, regardless of our backgrounds. Take a moment to read Psalm 1, hear from God, then offer a prayer of thanksgiving.
