“Forget the former things, do not dwell on the past. See I am doing a new thing. Now it springs up, do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.” (Isaiah 43:18-19)
Much time can be wasted by looking back! God’s Word in Isaiah clearly states: “Forget the former things.” We can certainly learn valuable lessons from our past, but there is nothing gained by continuing to look in the rear-view mirror. God uses our past stories to grow us and to teach us, but He doesn’t want us to stay there. In my life, there are times I wish I had made better choices. However, I cannot go back and change that now. If I’m not careful, I can become stuck and fixated on “if only.” This is one of Satan’s popular tactics. He loves to remind us of our past sin or bad choices. This can leave us feeling burdened with guilt-- which can make us less effective in our walk with God and our witness to others. Nothing makes the enemy happier. Satan loves it when we are looking back instead of forward.
“See I am doing a new thing” -- Can you see the new thing God wants to do in your life? When our focus is in reverse, it is difficult to see God at work. For the benefit of the people in Philippi – and for us as well -- Paul writes this:
Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.
(Philippians 3:13-14)
When we confess our sin to God, He forgives and remembers no more. Isaiah tells his people what the Lord has said:
“I, even I, am He who blots out your transgressions, for My own sake, and remembers your sins no more.”
(Isaiah 43:25)
God wants us to be in the present, focusing on Him with our eyes open to His “new things.” He is making a way in the wilderness. Where things look impossible to us, He is making a way. God is working all around us, and we are invited to join Him in the amazing plans He has already set in place. He will bring newness to our circumstances.
Can you see this new thing?
Are you looking for the new things He has planned? I Let’s not miss the opportunities God has in store for us. Let’s keep our eyes on Him!
