The Apostle Paul lived an extraordinary life—a life that has touched countless Christians throughout the centuries. Paul was a Roman citizen, but his Jewish heritage meant more to him than his Roman citizenship. Although he was born in Tarsus, located in modern day Turkey, he was raised in Jerusalem and studied under the famous teacher Gamaliel. Paul’s Jewish credentials were impeccable. As he spoke about himself, he was a “Hebrew of the Hebrews”.
In his zeal for preserving the Jewish traditions and the law, Paul received permission from the Jewish leaders to pursue and arrest anyone he could find who belonged to the early church. He later wrote how misguided his fellow Jews were because
…they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge. For, being ignorant of the righteousness of God, and seeking to establish their own, they did not submit to God’s righteousness
(Romans 10:2-3).
In a remarkable encounter on the road to Damascus to persecute Christians, Paul saw a great light from heaven and heard Jesus speak to him. When he learned he was encountering the glorified Lord Jesus, whom he had been persecuting, he became like putty in the hands of Christ and was ready to follow the Lord’s instructions. God chose Paul to bring the Gospel to the Gentiles in the years following Christ’s ascension into heaven.
Paul’s zeal never ceased, but he channeled it in an entirely different direction. Instead of enthusiastically trying to destroy the followers of Christ, he now used that same enthusiasm to win Jews and Gentiles to Christ. God created Paul to be zealous, and now that zeal turned the known world of his day upside down as he proclaimed the wonders of Christ and His work on the cross to redeem sinful man from the wrath to come.
Paul’s zeal arose from a strong need to be authentic in whatever he pursued. There was no hypocrisy—no hidden motive. After Paul’s conversion, he knew that God would be responsible for anything good that came out of his appointed ministry. God shaped Paul through his experiences to be fully dependent on Him. This was the secret to Paul’s success. Yet he fervently
pressed on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus
(Philippians 3:14).
Just as God used Paul’s unique personality to spread the Word to the Gentiles, He can use you for whatever service He is calling you to do. While He will always accomplish His determinative will, He chooses to use people like us to be His hands, His feet, and His lips. Are you in?
