Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. (Ephesians 6:10-11)
Years ago, I attended a missions conference where an American missionary to Brazil spoke about his first-hand experience with demons. He said that demon possession in that country is so prevalent and publicly observable that virtually no one doubts their existence. He also noted the contrast in the devil’s strategy between different countries. In countries like Brazil, where belief in demons is the norm, demons act out in plain view for people to see so they can frighten them. But in countries like the US, where so many of us don’t believe they exist, they work just as hard, but conceal themselves as they do so.
Whether we would like to believe it or not, the Bible is clear that Christians are in a battle with Satan and his demons. However, we are also promised the ultimate victory. Jesus said,
“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)
Trouble was brewing in Philippi as Paul and his companions were preaching Christ. After Lydia’s conversion to Christ (Acts 16:13-15), the devil sprang into action to oppose Paul’s further efforts. So, he used a demon-possessed slave girl to follow Paul around and to speak the truth about Paul and his missionary purpose. She said,
“These men are servants of the Most High God, who are telling you the way to be saved”
(verse 17).
I’ve always wondered why this demon-possessed girl would seem to promote what Paul was trying to do. But Paul apparently knew, because he was annoyed and troubled by it. So, he commanded the demon to come out of her, and the spirit left her.
Paul knew that the devil’s scheme was to infiltrate his evangelistic efforts. The way to successfully infiltrate is to appear initially to be in full agreement with Paul and his team. Once the infiltrator is accepted as being a part of them, then subtle lies can be effectively spread from the inside. The lies coming from within, which are more readily believed, have the ability to destroy the team’s work. The devil has continued to use this form of subtle warfare to divide Christians throughout the history of Christianity.
Although this attempt by the devil to infiltrate Paul’s group failed, the devil didn’t give up. His next ploy would be to use persecution to stop Paul. We shall look at this tomorrow.
