I have had the opportunity to go on multiple short-term mission trips. I have traveled to Sao Paulo, Brazil to share the gospel on college campuses, Costa Rica to tell weary travelers about the hope of Jesus, Louisiana where we
partnered with a local church for evangelism, and New Jersey/New York to assist with a church plant. In addition to that, I have traveled to some of the largest cities in Asia for business. In each place, one thing has always struck me: the enormity of lostness in this world. No matter what continent I have visited, I have seen untold millions in need of Jesus. Simply trying to think of how to reach so many people with the gospel is beyond my comprehension, which brings to mind this verse:
When he [Jesus] saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless,
like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are
few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest”
(Matthew 9:36-38).
Note that Jesus did not immediately send His disciples into the harvest. Eventually they were sent out, but first Jesus instructed them to pray. I am sure there are many reasons for the order Jesus chose. But do you think maybe He wanted them to know up front that His mission of taking the gospel to the lost is something we cannot do in our own strength or ability? The harvest is only reaped through God and what He does through us.
The Great Commission can only be accomplished when thousands of gospel-proclaiming disciples are sent to the
nations. Therefore, one of the most basic yet important things we can do is pray for God to send workers into the
harvest. Here are some resources to help.
1 ) The “Joshua Project” offers resources to help you pray for unreached people groups. You can sign up for daily emails as well as find other helpful items at https://joshuaproject.net.
2 ) Visit the IMB website (https://www.imb.org/pray) for resources to pray for specific needs. You can even focus on certain affinity groups God has placed on your heart.
3) Operation World provides resources to pray for the nations. Here you can sign up for videos, daily emails, and downloadable resources to help you pray.
Praying for missions is not sitting on the sidelines; it is an indispensable part of obeying Jesus, so let’s pray “to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.”
