Imagine being one of Jesus’ disciples after His resurrection -- with numerous questions running through your mind. What would you expect Him to do next? What do you think He would say about your life? What commands would He give? What would be His plan for Himself and for you?
As we can tell from the gospel accounts, the disciples did go through a period of confusion. Their world had recently been turned upside down after their Messiah was killed and then rose from the grave three days later. Little did they know that Jesus had a plan to not only turn their little worlds upside down, but to change the entire world. He told
them,
“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations,
baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all
that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age” (Matthew 28:18-20).
To help us understand the world-changing command of Jesus, we need to consider the four actions in this passage: go, make disciples, baptize, and teach. I won’t bore you with the nuances of the Greek language, but it helps to know “make disciples” is the central command with “going, baptizing, teaching” serving as participles (verbs that act like an adjective), which make them indispensable components of making disciples.
So just as we know the importance of baptism and teaching in the life of a follower of Jesus, the GO aspect is just as important. It is not an activity for a select few super spiritual Christians while the rest sit on the sidelines. No, we are all to play a part in taking the gospel to all the nations.
With that said, not everyone is called to move to a far-away land. So, how can we participate in Jesus’ mission to
GO? This week we’ll focus on different avenues for involvement in Jesus’ mission.
But before we get into specifics, we must first prepare our hearts to obey Jesus and follow where He leads us. So, spend time in prayer, using these ideas to guide your thoughts:
