I am not a farmer, but I can make a basic plowing shopping list:
Plowing Shopping List
1 – A plow
2 – Something to pull it
If I had plans to continue plowing my
field, I would get (and keep) those two things. But in 1 Kings 19, Elisha does just the opposite:
So Elijah went from there and found Elisha son of Shaphat. He was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen, and he himself was driving the twelfth pair. Elijah went up to him and threw his cloak around him. Elisha then left his oxen and ran after Elijah. “Let me kiss my father and mother goodbye,” he said, “and then I will come with you.”
… So Elisha left him and went back. He took his yoke of oxen and slaughtered them. He burned the plowing equipment to cook the meat and gave it to the people, and they ate. Then he set out to follow Elijah and became his servant.
(1 Kings 19:19-21)
Earlier in the chapter, Elijah has a conversation with God. He is afraid and running from King Ahab and Queen Jezebel, who are trying to kill him. He feels all alone. So, when he talks to God, he says in verse 14,
“I have been very zealous for the Lord God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected Your covenant, torn down Your altars, and put Your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too.”
God responds by giving Elijah help. He tells him to go to a nearby town to find the prophet that will succeed him, Elisha.
It never says that anyone told Elisha that Elijah was coming. When Elijah shows up, Elisha is plowing the field like he would be doing any day. I would think he would be more prepared for his new role if he knew what was coming. But Elisha was ready once he knew what his new role would be.
Once Elisha had the opportunity to serve, he was so excited that he slaughtered the oxen and cooked them using the materials from the plow! Remember that list of plowing materials? Elisha just used up both of them! There’s no turning back now! And so Elisha followed Elijah off into ministry.
Do we have that level of commitment when we serve in ministry today? Or do we want to hold on to our comfortable lifestyles and previous ways of living in case things don’t work out or get hard? Ask God to show you what you need to give up to serve Him more faithfully.
