In 1934, a 16-yr-old boy was denied membership in a local youth group – he was “too worldly.” A man who worked on his dad’s farm (that worker was Albert McMakin) persuaded the boy to go to a revival nearby. It was at that revival that Billy Graham gave his heart to Christ. I believe you know the rest of the story about the man who led over 3 million people to respond to the invitation to accept Jesus Christ as their personal Savior.
Around 2000 years ago, John the Baptist told a young man named Andrew about Jesus. The apostle John tells us what happened next – let’s listen in:
Andrew went to find his brother, Simon, and told him, “We have found the Messiah” (which means “Christ”). Then Andrew brought Simon to meet Jesus. (John 1:41-42)
That brother we know as Simon Peter – one of the three disciples in Jesus’ inner circle. Think of all that would not have happened had Andrew not shared the good news with his brother – messages that wouldn’t have been spoken, words that wouldn’t have been written, people who wouldn’t have heard the Good News.
There was another event where Andrew had an unexpected impact. It was on a day when Jesus was speaking to a huge crowd of people – a day much like any other day in the life of Jesus’ disciples. The crowd had been there for a long time and Jesus knew they were hungry – and wanted the disciples to make arrangements for food – an “impossible” task. That’s when Andrew pops up and says,
“There’s a young boy here with five barley loaves and two fish. But what good is that with this huge crowd?”
(John 6:9)
We can just imagine Jesus smiling inside -- knowing what we know now as the rest of this story -– how Jesus gave thanks to God for that little boy’s lunch and fed all those people – with to-go baskets left over! Both Andrew and that little boy became part of a bigger story!
We know little about Andrew other than that he and his brother were fishermen on the Sea of Galilee, and they grew up in Bethsaida. But the big deal about Andrew is that he introduced his brother to Jesus . . . and a little boy with five loaves and two fishes.
So… the question we have from Andrew’s story is this: Who do you need to introduce to Jesus – a neighbor, a relative, a co-worker, a friend? Start praying today for a God-sent opportunity to point them to Christ -- and be ready to be a small part of a bigger story!
