Yet Lord, You are our Father; we are the clay, and You are our Potter; we are all the work of Your hands. (Isaiah 64:8)
If life were an art lesson, we could describe it as a process of finding how to turn this mud into that porcelain, this discord into that sonata, this ugly stone block into that statue, this tangle of threads into that tapestry. In fact, however, the stakes are higher than in any art lesson. It is in the school of sainthood that we find ourselves enrolled and the artifact that is being made is ourselves.

Christianity: The True Humanism
In the Bible, most of the use of the word “potter” is God reminding His people that HE is in charge – not us!
Woe to him who quarrels with his Maker…Does the clay say to the potter, “What are you making?” (Isaiah 45:9)
You turn things upside down, as if the potter were thought to be like the clay!... Can the pot say of the potter, “He knows nothing”? (Isaiah 29:16)
Romans 9:21 also reflects on these verses, so I think we can surmise that it is in our nature to question things when God is molding our lives with methods we perhaps don’t appreciate. I know I have been a little less than cooperative in the Potter’s hand from time to time!
And yet, I want to be the work of art God wants me to be! I want to be loving and patient and gentle and faithful and all the things I love so much about Jesus. I want to be porcelain, music, a tapestry, or a beautiful statue. I don’t want to just be mud and discord and stone and tangled threads.
So, I guess that means I must undergo molding and firing, rearranging, chiseling, and weaving with other threads to become a lovely artifact from the “school of sainthood” mentioned in the quote above.
Sounds painful, and sometimes it is. But sometimes it is glorious music and beautiful sculpture and warm, lovely cloth. God is an artist who loves what (who) He is working with to create His masterpiece! We need not fear the process, for the Potter is kind beyond measure and the result is worth whatever He sends our way.
If you are in a season of being molded, remember whose hands you are in and try to be patient in the process. If you are on the other side of such a season, know you are more beautiful now than when He began, and will be more beautiful still as He continues to
conform you to the image of Christ
(Romans 8:29).
