Enough

This week we’re looking into the story of Elijah and an unexpected provider – a poor widow.
A hungry and thirsty Elijah followed God’s direction and went to the town where God said a widow would provide for him. When he arrived at the city gate, he saw a widow gathering sticks and asked her nicely to bring him a little bit of water in a cup… and a morsel of bread.
She told him all she had was a handful of flour and a little oil in a jar –
“and see, I am gathering a couple of sticks that I may go in and prepare it for myself and my son, that we may eat it
[as our last meal] and die.” (1 Kings 17:12) Basically, she was telling the prophet Elijah that she had nothing to offer. And if we investigated her paltry pantry, we would have agreed.
Have you, like the poor widow in our story, felt that you had nothing to offer? You look all around you and see people that seem to have more to offer than you – more resources, more talent, more energy, more everything!
Let’s get Jesus’ opinion on the matter from Matthew’s gospel when He observed a poor widow throwing two mites into the temple treasury:
He called His disciples to Himself and said to them, “Assuredly, I say to you that this poor widow has put in more than all those who have given to the treasury; for they all put in out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty put in all that she had, her whole livelihood.” (Mark 12:41-44) This poor widow gave everything she had – and it was enough – enough for us to be remembering her today!
Dear friend, you are enough. No one else can be you. No one else can do what God created you to do. It may not be money that He wants you to give. Maybe you are to give someone a smile; maybe you are to show kindness to someone who has seen only meanness in their world; maybe you are to hold someone’s hand as they go through their last days. Only you can do what you are meant to do. You are enough to accomplish God’s purposes for you. Please believe that and joyfully do what God commands you to do!
