I love being in college! Love living in the sorority house, taking classes, hanging out with friends; but it is hard. Being a Christian makes it even harder. In the span of four years, you make friends, pick a major, get involved, and build a resume. If you’re counting, there’s not much free time.
Fortunately, I attend a university close to home, which gives me the opportunity to stay at my home church. This was one thing I knew would stay constant when I got to school. During my freshman year, I joined a sorority and a campus ministry. One of these is not like the other. To be completely honest, the stereotypes of some sorority girls aren't wrong. The stereotypes of some college students aren't wrong either. This can be really hard to be around all the time. This can lead to a lot of temptations; and in this stage of life, you just want to fit in.
Living in the sorority house, every Thursday everyone gets ready to go to parties. Every Thursday, I get ready to go lead a Bible study. Once again, one of these is not like the other. While it can be hard to be the black sheep, I know the Lord has me here for a reason.
My parents told me two things about ministry: (1) ministry is not only inside the four walls of the church, and (2) everyone has a ministry. We can see throughout the Bible that the Lord used ordinary people to do extraordinary things. The twelve disciples Jesus chose weren't fancy people by any means. Andrew, Peter, James, and John were fishermen – definitely not a fancy occupation.
Not very glamorous – but Jesus said to those men, “Follow me, and I will make you a fisher of men.” (Matthew 4:19-20)
Being a college student is not all glamorous either. It's hard. But I choose every day to follow Jesus and allow Him to use me in the ministry where He has placed me. Someone needs to be there to show true love, kindness, gentleness, and joy to these girls. While it's hard to say “no” to the temptations around me and to sometimes feel left out, I have something way better and Someone far bigger in my life.
Everyone reading this has a ministry. If you don’t know where or what that ministry is, I encourage you to pray that the Lord would reveal it to you, and I pray that you will allow Him to use you. Go be fishers of men and make disciples of all nations wherever you are!
