This week’s theme is “Christmas in the heart of God.”
Anticipating Christmas this year got me thinking about electric utility company power crews. Hang with me here.
When a major hurricane strikes, the damage caused to the electric power grid is more than local utilities can repair within a reasonable time for residents, so other utilities will send crews to help. As you can imagine, having multiple crews from multiple companies all working in the same area requires lots of careful coordination. One part that’s fascinating to me is how the utilities “stage” their workers and equipment before the storm hits.
They don’t sit far away at home and watch the news until it’s safe to go in. What they do is gather all the employees, trucks, supplies, etc. and head to a staging area that is as close as they can safely get to where the hurricane is expected to land, and then they ride out the storm there. That way when the storm passes, they are already close to the areas where they are needed. It makes for the fastest response while keeping personnel and equipment safe.
It is wise and safe for crews to stay out of the storm, because if they got injured or their equipment was damaged, they wouldn’t be any good to the people who needed their help. It was different when Jesus came to live among us that first Christmas day. He didn’t stay just outside the storm; he got right in the middle of it.
Suddenly, a violent storm arose on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by the waves. But He was sleeping. So the disciples came and woke Him up, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to die!” But He said to them, “Why are you fearful, you of little faith?” Then He got up and rebuked the winds and the sea. And there was a great calm. (Matthew 8:24-26 HCSB)
As we anticipate Christmas this year let’s appreciate the fact that God anticipated our need for it from the very beginning. If we’re looking for peace, joy, and love this season, we don’t need to look outside whatever storm we’re in for what we seek.
