See if you can guess who wrote these words regarding work: I hated all my toil in which I toil under the sun, seeing that I must leave it to the man who will come after me…What has a man from all the toil and striving of heart with which he toils beneath the sun? For all his days are full of sorrow, and his work is a vexation. Even in the night his heart does not rest. This also is vanity.
Before I give you the answer, notice how much the author despised work. It is one thing to work, it is a different level of pain to “toil.” So, you might be surprised to learn these words are actually in the Bible. Solomon penned this in Ecclesiastes 2:18, 22-23. This wasn’t his conclusion on work, but it was an honest assessment of how he viewed work at one point in his life.
Can you relate to this? Does your occupation ever feel like toil and a burden to your existence? It might be due to the difficulty of the job, the drama of your co-workers, the demeanor of your boss, or the lack of pay for what you do. Or it could just be a certain task you have in an otherwise good role. The point is, we have all likely felt the futility of work.
This is due to Adam’s sin and God’s subsequent judgment. God said to him,
“Cursed is the ground because of you; in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life; thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you; and you shall eat of the plants of the field. By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread, till you return to the ground.” (Genesis 3:17b-19a)
That is a tough judgment given to Adam and subsequently to us. Yet this explains why work can be so hard, futile, and unenjoyable. How should we respond? Let’s hear from Solomon again.
What gain has the worker from his toil?... I perceived that there is nothing better for them than to be joyful and to do good as they live; also that everyone should eat and drink and take pleasure in all his toil—this is God’s gift to man. (Ecclesiastes 3:9, 12-13)
I would summarize it with these three actions:
1 - Seek to do good with your life regardless of the circumstances of your work.
2 - Enjoy the fruit of your labor in a way that honors God.
3 - Seek to glorify God in all you do.
Which of these will you focus on today?
