What is the best job you’ve ever had? To answer that, I assume many of us would value different things. For some, the job with the best hours or pay might be what comes to mind. For others, it could be the days spent caring for your kids at home with no salary or time to clock-out. Some people may value the sense of purpose that can come with certain roles or the simple enjoyment from your tasks. Whatever job you have enjoyed the most, I guarantee none compared to Adam’s assignment from God.
After breathing life into Adam and placing him in a garden grown by God, Adam is given this task.
The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it. (Genesis 2:15) He is given dominion over all the animals as he names each one (vv. 18-20). And to top it all off, God gave him the perfect co-worker in Eve (vv. 21-23).
Imagine this situation. Adam is perfectly suited for his role to
be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it. (Genesis 1:28). God created him with the gifts required, the authority he needs, and the help he can’t do without. He didn’t have an overbearing boss over his shoulder or a board of directors to make happy. He had an untamed world to rule, enjoy, and use to his benefit. Wouldn’t we all be so fortunate for such a dream job!
I mention all of this to remind us that work is meant to be good. Caring for this world, using God’s resources to make it better, conquering new frontiers, all while spreading His glory is a part of His design. It might not always feel like it as our work is now impacted by sin. That topic will be covered tomorrow but for now, reflect on these two key implications around the goodness of work:
1) Work provides a positive impact to your own life. This can be by keeping you active, earning money, or providing a sense of purpose.
2) Work provides a positive impact for others. It might be a service you provide, a product you make accessible, or something valuable you create.
With this in mind, take some time to thank God for all the things you are able to do -- and thank Him too for those who serve you in some way. And if you have the chance, express that thankfulness to someone today.
