After a mountaintop experience in Honduras, I dreamed of becoming a missionary doctor in Latin America. But God had a different path for me.
I am now a private practice dermatologist in Lexington, Kentucky. You may wonder how a dermatologist brings up Jesus in conversation with a patient. Well… I am frequently asked, “What made you decide to go into medicine?“ Because of my ministering to a sick man in Honduras named Isidro, I am able to tell his salvation story and how he told me to become a doctor so I could tell people about Jesus. And now I get to do just that!
Even though Isidro’s story may sound like I helped him, he helped me too and had a lasting effect on my life. God used him to guide me. I pray that I can encourage others the way he encouraged me. The verse I have claimed as my mission statement is Colossians 3:23:” Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not human masters.
Another very small way that I have tried to bring my faith to my workplace is through the background music playing in my office. Since starting my practice over 15 years ago, I have always played Christian music in my waiting room. It has amazed me that this has almost been like spiritual warfare. Keeping that music going has been one of the most difficult tasks at my office over the years. From mysterious tech problems to equipment issues, somehow it has always been a struggle. But it has been worth it. Countless patients have told me how the music has spoken to them especially when they were nervous or waiting for a procedure. And many times, a certain lyric was exactly what I needed to hear that day. I am thankful that in America we still have the freedom to openly share the gospel, even in a small way like background music.
My story is one of “bloom where you are planted.“ I love Psalm 16:6: The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; surely I have a delightful inheritance. I don’t have to be a foreign missionary to point people to Christ. I only have to really see the person God has placed right in front of me and try to meet their need, however big or small that need may be.
How can you bloom where you are planted? How can you touch the life of someone right in front of you?
Ask God to show you one way you can show the love of Jesus to someone through your work.
