Valeria popped by my house bringing me a bouquet of birthday flowers from the Sunday School class – it was my birthday! What she didn’t know was that I had just that minute arrived back home from the hospital where my brother had died only an hour earlier. We were both surprised – I wondered how she knew (she didn’t), and she was surprised that the birthday flowers became sympathy flowers. She came in, and we had a sweet visit – an encouraging time for both of us – since she herself was in the process of dying.
Valeria was the poster child of child-like faith – the kind of faith I believe God truly enjoys. That doesn’t imply that she wasn’t biblically sound and smart – it just means that she had an unwavering trust in her heavenly Father -- a deep faith that made sense to her in every way. She was talking with me one time during this season of her life and was wondering why her family was so upset about it all. In her opinion, it was a win-win situation. If she got well, she’d get to enjoy her family and witness for Christ a little longer; if she didn’t get well, she’d see Jesus and her much-loved husband, who preceded her in death. Win-win.
That was Valeria – and that was also Paul! The apostle Paul was determined that Christ would be magnified in his body, whether by his life or by his death (Philippians 1:20).
As he was writing to the people in Philippi, he was in prison and sharing the gospel with those guarding him. Those who imprisoned him hoped to shut him up; however, just the opposite happened.
But I want you to know, brethren, that the things which happened to me have actually turned out for the furtherance of the gospel, so that it has become evident to the whole palace guard, and to all the rest, that my chains are in Christ; and most of the brethren in the Lord, having become confident by my chains, are much more bold to speak the word without fear. (Philippians 1:12-14)
What looks to the world as bad news may actually turn out to be good news – as it did in Paul’s imprisonment. Are you willing to embrace the good news even when everything around you looks pretty much like bad news? Do you trust God with your life – and your death?
The end of this earthly life came soon for Valeria; the end also came soon for Paul. But for both, it was a win! Thanks be to God for His beautiful examples of trusting faith.
