Once upon a time, a long time ago, there were two brothers working in the family business with their father. They were fishermen, most likely from a long line of fishermen, and I imagine they were looking forward to a lifetime of fishing for a living. But then, something totally unexpected happened, and their lives were changed forever!
Going on from there, He saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, preparing their nets. Jesus called them, and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed Him.
(Matthew 4:21-22)
James and John were two of the earliest disciples called and were in Jesus’ inner circle of three. (Some scholars think they were cousins of Jesus, because Matthew 27:56, Mark 15:40 and John 19:25 taken together could be interpreted that way.)
And they were brothers. Don’t you think it’s wonderful that they experienced all they did together? I can just imagine the late-night private conversations, the looks that passed between them because each knew exactly what the other was thinking, the spats and the comfort that come from living near family. It makes me smile.
As we look at James and John this week, we will discover that they were as flawed as any of us are. They were impulsive, presumptuous, and apparently had bad tempers. They were ordinary men, yet Jesus called them, taught them, and used them mightily to begin the church.
You have probably heard that God uses ordinary people in extraordinary ways; it may even sound cliché to you. You may think, “Yeah, yeah, that was then, and this is now.” I get that. I have a hard time imagining that God could use
me in any powerful way. However, I am grateful that He can if He so chooses. All I have to do is be willing.
Let’s not quickly dismiss God’s desire to use even you, even me, to further His kingdom. As hard as it is all these centuries later to really understand, James and John and all the other apostles were just ordinary men until Jesus invited them to follow Him. Let’s think about that fact until we can really see them as such. Then perhaps we will be able to see ourselves as someone Jesus can also use in powerful ways. Maybe we will be more willing and more inspired to be used by Him!
