This week we are looking at disciples James and John.
Boanerges. That is what Jesus called the brothers, James and John, “Sons of Thunder,” according to Mark 3:17. Now you and I might consider that an insult, but I have a son who would probably grin at that nickname and relish it. Young men tend to like to be considered worthy of tough-sounding nicknames. I imagine James and John may have felt the same way and took a bit of pride in that nickname!
A careful reading of the gospels gives us some insight into why Jesus called them that. In Luke 9 we read that John called out someone who was not part of their group for casting out demons in Jesus’ name, earning a rebuke from Him. In the same chapter, a Samaritan village did not welcome Jesus and His disciples; so, James and John asked if they could call down fire from heaven to destroy them. This earned them another rebuke from the Lord!
James and John seem in Scripture to be impetuous and quick to take offense; they had a temper. Jesus didn’t let them off the hook for that, but He also didn’t reject them because of it. As a matter of fact, they and Peter were His closest friends, the ones who got to see His transfiguration and the ones He asked to pray with Him in the garden.
You see, once we belong to Jesus our temperament, our flaws, even our sin does not end His love for and acceptance of us. We are His beloved, a fact that never ceases to amaze me. I can be quick-tempered (especially in traffic), selfish, lazy, and thoughtless. I often feel so unworthy of Jesus’ love and patience with me. I sure am grateful for it, though. I definitely feel convicted when I sin, but I have learned I can run straight to Him for forgiveness. I don’t have to wait a certain amount of time or do penance or somehow earn it; He is ready to forgive and even to still use me for His good purposes.
Jesus is in the transformation business, just look at James and John. Instead of calling down fire, James was willing to die for the cause of Christ, becoming the first recorded martyr (Acts 12:2). And John went from being called a “Son of Thunder” to being called “John the Beloved”. The same can happen for us, my friends. I am not who I would like to be yet, but praise God I am not what I once was. Let’s be encouraged today, resting in the loving patience of our Savior. Shalom.
