There are big pains. There are little pains. And there are persistent pains.
Some of the most painful situations are the chronic ones. Perhaps it is a child’s learning
difference that results in years of teasing. Maybe it’s a physical illness such as diabetes or Crohn’s disease that makes the necessary task of eating difficult. Sometimes we pray for family members who struggle with addiction, anger, or lostness.
If we are honest, most of us carry these persistent pains without telling anyone. The burden can be heavy.
There are those in the Bible who had the same types of pain. There was Hannah’s infertility. The woman with the issue of blood suffered for twelve years. Paul, likewise, had a similar unknown pain.
He shares,
Therefore, in order to keep me from becoming conceited, I was given a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me. Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:7-9).
No one knows what Paul’s thorn in the flesh may have been, but we do know God’s answer to his plea for help. It was NO.
Paul’s faith-filled response was:
That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong (2 Corinthians 12:10).
Dear Child of God, God knows all about your pain. You might hide it from others, but He knows.
And He loves you.
God really loves you.
The same grace that saved you from your sin can carry you. His grace is truly sufficient.
Today, follow the example of Hannah, the woman with the issue of blood and Paul. Trust Him.
For when you are weak, He is strong.
