This week’s devotions are about the wedding feast at Cana in Galilee. Today’s devotion focuses
on John 2:11.
I was recently solving a jigsaw puzzle with my nephews and nieces. My youngest nephew was
looking for a piece and found it in the box, and it was already connected to the adjoining piece.
He held them up and said, “God put these pieces together!” My nephew believed he had seen a
miracle!
This week we’ve studied a miracle in Cana; Jesus had turned water into wine at the wedding in
Cana, and this is what happened next: Jesus did this, the first of his signs, in Cana of
Galilee. He revealed his glory, and his disciples believed in him. (John 2:11)
Jesus’ miracle was very significant, and it convinced some of his closest followers to fully
believe in Him and join Him as His ministry began.
As we discussed in yesterday’s devotion, if 750 bottles of wine suddenly showed up, I think we
would all be convinced something was going on. Or would we? We now have wine
“superstores” with over 8,000 bottles of wine in each one. And in Kentucky, we currently have
over 11 million barrels of bourbon. Maybe we wouldn’t notice an extra 750 bottles of wine as
easily as we would think. But at Cana, it was impossible not to notice the sudden appearance of
such a quantity of the finest wine!
We frequently pray for God to intervene in our life circumstances. He doesn’t intervene every
time; but when He does heal a sick friend, restore a marriage or improve a seemingly hopeless
financial situation, who gets the credit? Sometimes we just think, “It’s a good thing we have
talented people who know what to do in these situations.” We often forget to give credit and
glory to God.
We could all use a faith lesson from my nephew. God can and does intervene, and He does it
when He chooses. We need to recognize and appreciate it when He does. Jesus treasured that
childlike faith when He said, “Let the little children come to me, and don’t stop them,
because the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Truly I tell you, whoever does not
receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.” (Luke 18:16-17)
