Then Peter asked, “Can anyone object to their being baptized, now that they have
received the Holy Spirit just as we did?” So he gave orders for them to be baptized in
the name of Jesus Christ. (Acts 10:47-48)
The more that I study Acts 10, the more I fall in love with this small, little moment in
church history. I mean, think about it…A Roman Centurion has a divine stirring in his
heart and abandons Roman paganism for the God of the Jews. He starts giving to the
poor and praying devoutly. Meanwhile, 32 miles North in Joppa the pre-eminent Apostle
Peter is having a weird dream about food on the roof of a Jewish tanners house named
Simon. After both men are visited by the Holy Spirit in a vision and one very awkward
introduction, the Holy Spirit is falling on everyone in Cornelius’ house and Cornelius
gets Saved! Can you believe that? No one would have seen that coming!
You know what else no one saw coming? No one saw Jeremy Streck giving his life to
Jesus through F.C.A. in 1997 but that’s exactly what happened. In case you missed
Monday’s devotion, Jeremy was an intimidating offensive lineman whose locker was
near mine at U.K. and a guy that I avoided at all costs. In my mind, (Like Peter with
Cornelius) Jeremy was squarely in the “common and unclean” camp. In reality, apart
from the grace of God, there was very little difference in Jeremy’s heart and mine. And
once saved, Jeremy was a better man than I was in certain areas of life.
Jeremy was not only an amazing student-athlete, but he became one of the most
encouraging voices in the locker room. He was a gentle giant. He started visiting kids in
the Children’s Hospital and using his life to make a difference in the lives of others. After
graduation Jeremy was engaged to be married and had started working for Lexmark.
Watching Jeremy’s like left us all saying (with Peter) “Can anyone object” to the
amazing work of God in Jeremy’s life. Sadly, in October of 1999, just 9 months after we
played in the Outback Bowl together, Jeremy was struck and killed by a drunk driver.
As I traveled to Ohio and stood over the casket of my teammate and imagined what
unspeakable pleasures and adventures he must have been having with Jesus (no
longer hindered by time or the flesh) I promised myself that, never again, would I call
someone “common” that God had made clean. Jeremy was an un-common Christian,
for that’s the only kind there is!
Q: Who might be the “Jeremy Streck” in your life? Begin praying for that person and ask
the Spirit for opportunities to show them love and kindness.
