The Truth that Sets Us Free

When it comes to all the information available to us, I believe these famous words apply: “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.” We have more data, more access to news, and easier ability to communicate than any other time in history. For example, if you are wondering about the book and author of my previous quote, you can find it in about 30 seconds. You might not even need to type if you have Siri, Alexa, or your AI of choice close by.
Amid all this information we hear things like “fake news,” “alternative facts,” and “misinformation.” In addition to that, our culture is full of outright lies about God, man, and righteousness. This world of lies leads to confusion, destruction, or godlessness for many. If we are not careful, even good people can be led astray.
In such a world, Jesus gives us hope.
So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:31-32)
In this context, Jesus was talking about the truth of who He is. He isn’t directly addressing our need to identify fact from fiction on our newsfeed, but His words do help. Let me explain.
First, we begin with a fundamental understanding that what God has revealed in the Bible is true. Anything that contradicts that is a lie. With the Bible as our guide, we should not be confused about male and female, marriage, godly conduct, or how to treat others. As Jesus says, we must abide in His word if we want to know truth.
Second, we can see the close connection between abiding in His word and being His disciple. If being a disciple of Jesus is our highest priority, we can keep other pursuits or concerns in their rightful place. I see many people led astray when they care too much that a politician or political position is right. This disordered desire makes one quick to believe the latest headline or social media rumor with little regard to discernment.
And last, true freedom comes when we understand that truth is not just an abstract concept. Truth is a person, and His name is Jesus (John 14:6). He is the One we follow and listen to above all other voices. As we walk in fellowship with Him and His people, lies have a harder time getting into our hearts and minds.
Are you abiding in Him?
