The Light of the World

A recent storm reminded us how much we appreciate electricity. Our younger girls thought we were living in the Stone Age due to the lack of internet, lights, and the other niceties of life. We somehow survived until the power came back on.
With the proliferation of electricity, we don’t always appreciate having light at the flip of a switch. The same can be said for spiritual light and darkness. If we have been following Jesus for a while or have been raised in the church, the darkness in the world may not always be apparent. But just like a storm that knocks out electricity, a news story or personal experience reminds us that sin and darkness do exist. In these moments, we can better appreciate these words of Jesus.
Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12)
Throughout the Bible, darkness refers to the absence of God and His influence in the world. This void leads to a focus on one’s own selfish desires, confusion about right and wrong, and a lack of justice for the powerless. A world in darkness is a world that “doesn’t know their right hand from their left” (Jonah 4:11).
It is into this world that Jesus shines. He the light that lifts our eyes from ourselves and onto God; He is the light that leads us on the path of righteousness; and He is the light to bring peace to those in need. How do we obtain this light? Jesus makes it clear; we follow Him.
We don’t have to outsmart the world, be better than others, or gain power. We simply follow Jesus. When we do, we not only receive ‘the light of the world’ but we get to shine His light for others. As He tells us in Matthew 5:14, “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.”
How can you share the light of Jesus today? Will you tell someone about the grace He offers? Will you reach out to someone going through a personal storm to offer encouragement or help? Will you give so the gospel can reach those who have never heard?
Let’s live bright lives so this verse can be said of more and more people. “The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shone” (Isaiah 9:2).
