Therefore, all who are mature, let’s have this attitude; and if in anything you have a different attitude, God will reveal that to you as well; however, let’s keep living by that same standard to which we have attained. (Philippians 3:15-16 NASB)
Paul says that all believers should follow this path or pattern of forgetting the past and pressing on toward the goal. Each of us has had some moment when the past creeps into the present and invites us to turn back or just settle in where we find ourselves. This is one of the favored tools of the enemy.
The idea of forgetting the past, of leaving it behind and pressing on, may seem overwhelming at first, so where should we begin? The first step is to put the past in the past. Consider this quote from John Piper: Occasionally weep deeply over the life you hoped would be. Grieve the losses. Then wash your face. Trust God. And embrace the life you have. Grieving the losses will lead to confession and repentance where necessary. Having dealt with the past, surrender it to Him, and don’t look back.
How do you walk differently from this point forward? The Apostle wrote to the Galatians about living by faith, about living by His power: I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me (Galatians 2:20).
Nearly 40 years ago as an undergraduate, I took a mechanical drawing class as an elective. I still remember the first time the professor picked up a model and began to draw it on the board. Without the aid of a ruler, he repeatedly drew straight lines from one point on the chalkboard to another. Someone finally asked how he managed to do that? His answer was really pretty simple: find the starting point and the end point, place the chalk on the starting point, focus on the end point, and draw the line.
If you try that with a pencil and piece of paper, you’ll find with practice you are drawing a much straighter line. The same is true in our walk with Christ. The starting point is to leave the past in the past. Focus on Jesus and run the toward the goal. With practice and repetition, you will find your life being conformed more and more to His image, the purpose for which you were first laid hold of by Christ.
