I have cried Hannah’s tears. I have prayed Hannah’s prayers.
The LORD closed my womb just as He closed Hannah’s.
And it hurt. I didn’t like it one bit.
Long agonizing story short, I found myself praying a tearful prayer in a chapel of a church far from home one Sunday.
We were on our last fertility treatment. There was only one chance left and I named our last chance, “Gideon”. People were praying that tiny baby Gideon would make it into the world.
As I prayed, I reminded God that He could receive so much glory if Gideon survived. I was sincere in the plan to give Him all the credit, but the prayer still felt a little selfish. So, I acknowledged that might not be His plan for us and that there may be another way in which He could be glorified. As much as I could, I placed it in God’s hands. Just like Hannah.
Perhaps you have not experienced infertility like Hannah and me. However, I’m sure that we have all experienced something in each of our lives that is painful and, sometimes, hopeless.
When we endure pain and cry out to God, He will answer us. The answer can be no, wait, or yes. And no matter what the answer is, we can hold tight to this promise:
Those who sow with tears will reap with songs of joy.
Those who go out weeping, carrying seed to sow,
will return with songs of joy, carrying sheaves with them. (Psalm 126:5-6)
Place your painful situation into the hands of our loving God. Know that He cares for you.
