In a self-centered world, the concept of sacrifice rarely gets a nod. Yet, sometimes in strong
friendships, one friend must step back into the shadows so the other friend can shine. And in
another season, the roles might reverse as the one who once shone now steps back into the
shadows so the other friend can shine. And sometimes the encouragement of the one in the
shadows provides a lifeline for the one who is center stage.
We see that demonstrated in the account of David and Jonathan. For the early part of his life,
Jonathan was in the limelight – the son of the king, blessed with all that came with his royal
position. He was assumed to be the next king after his father, King Saul. His path was pretty
well predetermined – at least according to those in his orbit.
But when Jonathan’s heart connected with David, he somehow recognized that before him
stood the one God had chosen to succeed King Saul. In 1 Samuel 18, we read what Jonathan
did with that insight: Then Jonathan and David made a covenant… And Jonathan took off
the robe that was on him and gave it to David, with his armor, even to his sword and his
bow and his belt (1 Samuel 18:3-4).
Jonathan gave David the symbols of his royal position and his protection! Much to the dismay of
his father, Jonathan willingly sacrificed his role as presumptive king. His earthly father burned
with anger, but Jonathan’s heavenly Father must have smiled on this moment.
In our earthly friendships, we are often called to sacrifice time, resources, and energy on behalf
of our friends – especially when they are experiencing challenging times. Sometimes the roles
reverse – but sometimes friends are just called to “pay if forward” when other friends have
challenging seasons. Some of our sacrifices for friends are not understood by others, but be
assured that your heavenly Father smiles on those moments when you step back or step in.
But most important of all -- remember that in Jesus you too have a Friend who sacrificed for
you. He gave up His royal position to come dwell in a human body like yours – and because He
gave His life for you, you too are a child of the King. You too are blessed with all the benefits
that come from your royal position. So, today claim your royal identity and count your blessings
– all because of His love.
“Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.” (John 15:13)
