Last night we had some dear friends over to our house for dinner. Sharing dinner not only deepens relationships, it also gives me extra motivation to clean my house.
I spent the day decluttering, cleaning, fixing dinner and making the dinner table look nice. Throughout the day, I had my eye on the clock. I knew what time they were to arrive, and I hoped that they did not arrive 20 minutes early because I would not have been ready. It took each and every minute.
If you stopped by our house today, it would still be in great shape. I would love to think that I will always have it ready for company, but the day-to-day distractions of life get in the way as does the extra stuff that we just can’t let go of in the house.
We all know that Jesus is coming back. We all know that our time is “short” but as Jesus said,
“But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father”
(Matthew 24:36 NIV).
He spoke those words so long ago that it has become easy to become complacent, like me during the week leading up to our friends’ dinner visit. I could have prepared the house a week ahead of time, but I didn’t. I made a few preparations but, in all honesty, I was not prepared even the day before.
This is not what Jesus wants from His followers. He wants us to be ready.
He said,
“Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come . . . So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.” (Matthew 24:42,44).
He wants us to act like He’s coming at 6 o’clock tonight!
If Jesus was coming tonight or Saturday night at 6:00, how would you prepare? Would you allow life to distract you from living for Him? Would you hold on to the sins that you just can’t let go of in your life? Would you continue to be afraid of “persecution,” or would you boldly proclaim the message?
Friends, it’s time to get ready. Jesus is coming back. It truly doesn’t matter when -- we need to live our lives each day as if He will be here tonight.
