Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right … Fathers, do not exasperate your children;
instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord. (Ephesians 6:1,4)
The family unit is a central structure within the Christian faith, serving as a microcosm of the Church and
reflecting God's design for relational harmony. The apostle Paul, in addressing the family dynamic,
speaks to both children and parents, providing guidance that is anchored in the principles of the Gospel.
Children are called to obedience. This obedience, however, is not blind or slave-like; it is framed "in the
Lord," suggesting that it should be in harmony with God's character and commandments. The call for
children to obey their parents is tied to the understanding that parents are God's representatives,
tasked with the responsibility of guiding their children in the ways of righteousness and love.
It is important for children to understand that their obedience is not just about following rules but about
growing in wisdom and character. It is through this process that they learn to discern right from wrong
and to build a foundation of trust and respect that will serve them throughout their lives.
Parents, and fathers in particular, are cautioned against provoking their children to anger or frustration.
The term 'exasperate' implies a pattern of treatment that can lead to resentment, discouragement, or
rebellion. Instead, Paul instructs parents to engage in the positive and constructive work of nurturing
their children in the "training and instruction of the Lord." This involves a balanced approach that
combines discipline with instruction, setting boundaries while also explaining the moral and spiritual
reasoning behind them.
The Gospel impacts this dynamic by providing a model of loving authority, as seen in Christ's relationship
with His disciples. Jesus led with compassion, patience, and an unwavering commitment to the well-
being of those under His care. Similarly, parents are to exhibit these qualities as they raise their children,
ensuring that discipline is administered in love and that instruction is given with wisdom.
The ultimate goal of this guidance is to raise children who are not only obedient but also discerning,
capable of understanding and embracing the values of the Kingdom. It is about instilling in them a sense
of purpose and identity that is rooted in their relationship with Christ.
As a parent, how can you balance the necessary discipline and instruction of your children with the
nurturing love and patience exemplified by Christ? Tomorrow’s devotion will focus on relationships
outside the family unit and onto the broader community and the mutual responsibilities that come with
being part of the body of Christ.
