Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy
and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual act of worship. Do not conform any longer to the pattern of
this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. (Romans 12:1-2)
I’ve noticed that newer Christians often express much more enthusiasm about their newfound faith
than more “seasoned” Christians. It would seem like it should be the other way around. Shouldn’t our
enthusiasm grow as we become more mature in our knowledge of God?
The apostle made it clear that Christians should be full of joy. He wrote, Rejoice in the Lord always. I
will say it again: Rejoice! (Philippian 4:4) If you feel that your inner joy is waning instead of increasing,
perhaps the answer can be found in how you think about the Lord and what He has done for you.
How well do you understand the mercies and grace God has extended to you? Are you overwhelmed by
them, or do you take them for granted? One good way to find out is to examine your prayer life. Are you
motivated to pray out of a sense of duty or because you can’t wait to have an intimate time together
with your God? And how much of your prayer time do you spend praising God and thanking Him for
every blessing you can remember?
Romans 12:1-2 suggests that our motivation should be “in view of God’s mercy”. Christians have been
saved only because God has chosen to be merciful to them, not because He was under any kind of
obligation to save us. Jesus reminds us that even if we do everything He commands us to do, we are still
“unworthy servants” (Luke 17:7-10).
He is holy, and we are unholy. And yet, God loved us enough to send His only Son to live among us and
die in our place for our sins. Our ultimate destination is in heaven, not in hell as we so aptly deserve.
And He has not left us alone. He has given us the Holy Spirit as an encouraging and empowering
presence in our lives. He loves us more than we love ourselves.
Friends, revisit the cross in your heart of hearts. Remember what Christ has done for you. At the cross,
God laid upon Jesus all the bad things about you. And He covered you with everything perfect about
Him. You are no longer His enemies and without hope. He has brought you near to Himself. If you
believe in Jesus, you have been reconciled forever with your God and creator. Therefore, take joy!
