The eyes of the LORD are in every place, keeping watch on the evil and the good. (Proverbs 15:3 ESV)
Our society seems obsessed with capturing everything on video. We have cameras on our cell phones and tablets, we have dashboard cameras, cameras on our doorbells, cameras on traffic signals, cameras at the self-checkout in Walmart, and the list goes on. In a free society, this surveillance culture leads to debate about how much is too much and where to draw the line of privacy. In some cases, this video aids in solving crimes or determining who is at fault in an accident. But sometimes, embarrassing moments are captured and posted for others to see.
Before cameras were everywhere with the capacity to store the images, Scripture teaches us that the God who sees has been watching everything. How does it make you feel to know that nothing is hidden? Maybe not the warm, fuzzy feeling you expect from a devotional. We’ve talked this week about God’s watchful eye of protection and strength for His children. To be fair with the truth, we also need to address what this verse teaches us, that the Lord is keeping watch over all, including both the evil and the good.
God’s record won’t get ignored, overwritten, or discarded like much of the video our society produces today. One day, all those things we thought were secret, that didn’t get captured on the record, will be revealed.
“The time is coming when everything that is covered up will be revealed, and all that is secret will be made known to all.”
(Luke 12:2 NLT)
The truth that nothing is hidden that won’t one day be revealed is sobering and should impact the way we live. But what about that which is already done? If, as a follower of Jesus, you have some hidden things that need to be dealt with, confess them to the Lord.
But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.
(1 John 1:9 NLT)
Perhaps you are not a follower of Jesus, but the realization that all will one day be revealed brings a sense of conviction. The truth is that He who sees everything about you, even before time, loved you in spite of what he saw, and made a way for you to have fellowship with Him.
But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.
(Romans 5:8 NLT)
Is He watching you as His child, with the eyes of a loving Shepherd, or as a judge who will one day reveal all?
