But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. (Galatians 5:22-23)
Interesting! There’s no law against loving people, sharing joy and peace, being kind, or making the choice not to act out in anger. I read the
“there is no law” statement a few times, because the declaration seemed odd -- which makes acknowledging it even more important. There has never been a law against treating people with love and kindness – ever!
I love fresh fruits and vegetables, but to grow them myself takes a serious amount of investment, work and effort even in my small garden. One year, my cousin Jenny and I decided to grow a garden. We planned and we worked – having fun together in the process. We were so proud that we grew plants from seed; however, if you plant forty peppers in a 4 x 8 space, you get nothing, because there is too much competition.
Frankly, producing any fruit takes knowledge and caring about each specific plant. Sometimes, I don’t have time to weed, but I do it anyway. Sometimes, I wish it would rain, but it doesn’t and I have to make time to water. Sometimes, the plant grows bigger than I planned or in an area where I didn’t want it to grow, but I still care for it. Sometimes, a garden doesn’t yield much, but it’s still worth the effort; and there’s always hope for next year.
God is the gardener of all life. He pruned the universe, so He can certainly prune me. He wants every ounce of goodness from us so that there are more branches out in the world bearing fruit. He cares about me, my family and friends, but He also cares about the lonely woman who lives a few doors down from me. He wants me to get to know her and care about her needs.
God loves and cares about the person whose lifestyle I don’t understand. He knows that sharing my love, joy and friendship with them could make an eternal difference. It matters to God how I treat those who are of a different faith than me or from a different cultural background. How will they know the truth if I don’t make the time to respectfully listen to them? God cares that I think more about those around me than myself.
Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control aren’t just gifts for you and me. These qualities, the fruit of the Spirit, are specially cultivated in every child of God to help the people around us see Jesus.
