There are events in our lives that are so pivotal, we remember everything about the moment we heard the news or met someone. Some of us still remember Kennedy’s assassination or the events of September 11. Others remember the moment they first met their spouse.
The moment John met Jesus, he had the same experience:
The next day John was there again with two of his disciples. When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, “Look, the Lamb of God!”
When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus. Turning around, Jesus saw them following and asked, “What do you want?”
They said, “Rabbi” (which means “Teacher”), “where are you staying?”
“Come,” he replied, “and you will see.”
So they went and saw where he was staying, and they spent that day with him. It was about
four in the afternoon. (John 1:35-39)
When John (and Andrew) met Jesus at four in the afternoon, Jesus invited them to spend the day with Him.
What would that have been like? Aren’t you just a teensy bit jealous that they got to spend the day with Him? That day literally changed their lives.
I remember the day the phrase “they spent that day with him” jumped off the page at me. John and Andrew spent a day with Jesus and then decided to follow Him. Instead of wondering what it was like, I decided to do the same thing.
I cleared my calendar. I dropped the kids off at school. And then gave the entire school day to Jesus.
Leaving the car line, I prayed and asked God to tell me which way to turn. I had no idea what would happen or where He might lead me.
I had the best day. As I drove by houses, the Lord told me how to pray for people. I saw the city in a different way. He had me take a nap and have lunch with my husband. The day was a restorative delight.
The challenge today and this year is this: spend a day with Jesus and discover the difference it makes. Perhaps the day will be so pivotal, you will never forget it.
