Chances are, one day, someone encouraged, helped, and inspired you -- a godly man or woman who became like a second parent to you. There was something about the person that reminded you of who you could be in the future; there was a connection.
One day
Paul came to… Lystra, where a disciple named Timothy lived… The believers at Lystra and Iconium spoke well of him. Paul wanted to take him along on the journey… As they traveled from town to town, they delivered the decisions reached by the apostles and elders in Jerusalem for the people to obey. So the churches were strengthened in the faith and grew daily in numbers (Acts 16:1-4).
When Paul met the young Timothy, there was a connection. Timothy was a lot like Paul -- had a good reputation and was a dedicated disciple. Paul took Timothy with him “on the journey,” where Timothy learned from Paul as they ministered. Eventually, Paul and Timothy went on separate journeys.
Paul continued to encourage Timothy through letters. In fact, of the four letters Paul wrote to individuals in our New Testament, two were written to Timothy (1 and 2 Timothy).
2 Timothy begins:
To Timothy, my dear son: Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. I thank God, whom I serve, as my ancestors did, with a clear conscience, as night and day I constantly remember you in my prayers. Recalling your tears, I long to see you, so that I may be filled with joy (vv. 2-4).
Paul LOVED Timothy like a son. He prayed for him day and night. He couldn’t wait to see him. Think about it; let it soak in. Paul LOVED him. He didn’t spend time with him out of a sense of duty or because Ananias and Barnabas had done it for him. Paul encouraged Timothy out of LOVE.
As Christians, we are called to disciple others. We may think of this calling as hard work or unfulfilling. We may have the false assumption that we are going to have to go far out of our comfort zones to help younger believers grow in their walk with Christ. However, when we disciple others, we share Paul’s experience: we will LOVE those we disciple. It will not be a burden; it will be a joy. It will refresh and energize us.
One day, you will meet someone you inspire, someone you can help and encourage -- a godly young man or woman who will be like a child to you. You’ll see something in that person that reminds you of yourself.
Reach out your hand. Open your heart. Be prepared to love.
