Jesus’ Burial – A Display of God’s Providence

If Jesus Christ was raised from the dead, then everyone joined with Him by faith should expect to be raised from the grave too. But how can we know for sure that it’s true? Once we’re satisfied that the Holy Bible is an historically reliable record, we can be certain that the evidence for the resurrection is indisputable.
There’s not only solid evidence from those who loved and believed in Jesus, there’s also just as strong evidence that comes from His enemies. There’s evidence that comes from the circumstances of His burial, eyewitness accounts of Jesus’ post-resurrection appearances, and the impossible lie told by the soldiers who guarded the tomb.
Let’s first consider Jesus’ burial. Scripture gives us two prophecies about Jesus’ burial. The first one comes from the prophet Isaiah. He wrote, “He was assigned a grave with the wicked, and the rich in his death …” (Isaiah 53:9). Jesus was supposed to be thrown in with the criminals, but He ended up with a rich man in His death. Joseph of Arimathea, a member of the Sanhedrin who had been a secret disciple, was now unexpectedly willing to take a stand for Christ. So, this rich man went to Pilate to beg for the body of Christ, so he could give Him a proper burial in his own new tomb.
Joseph, who was accompanied by Nicodemus, took Jesus’ body and wrapped it with seventy-five pounds of spices, in strips of linen, and placed it in the tomb. Then he rolled a big stone in front of the entrance to the tomb and went away. Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were there at the tomb and saw how His body was laid in it. Then they went home and prepared spices to anoint His body after the Sabbath.
The second prophecy came from the lips of Jesus. “For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth” (Matthew 12:40). For this to come true, Jesus had to buried before sundown on Friday (the end of the first day). And as the Jews counted the days, Jesus had to remain buried until sometime after sundown on Saturday. Pilate may have had every reason to deny Joseph’s request, but God providentially ensured his request would be granted.
These two prophecies would not have been fulfilled if God had not orchestrated the events of Jesus’ burial as He did. We’ll see further proofs of the resurrection of Jesus Christ tomorrow.
