For I have no one like him… how as a son with a father… he has served with me in the gospel… (Philippians 2:20, 22)
It’s often been said in Christian circles: “Everyone needs a Paul, and everyone needs a Timothy.” This antiquated little quip has staying power because of its alignment with God’s Word and the example that Jesus set for the disciples. Indeed, it is to everyone’s benefit to have a Paul in their life. My Paul’s name was Max Appel. Max was Area Director for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes in 1994 when I arrived at the University of Kentucky. My freshman year at U.K. was an absolute train wreck. Athletically I was red-shirted, which means that I was on the team, but never played in any games. I dressed out and looked impressive to some, but I never made a difference for my team. Academically, my GPA was an abysmal 1.7 and my spiritual and relational life was as empty as an abandoned Harlan County coal mine. And then I met Max.
Max welcomed me into an inner circle of athletes that he was discipling at U.K. in 1995. Max provided me with encouragement, new friends, biblical truth, prayer, and a vision for how God could use my one and only life to be a blessing to others. Everything changed. My circle of influence changed, my use of time changed, my purpose in life changed. By God’s grace I became the starting punter for U.K. and took every snap for four years. That summer I met Carrie Sparrow who would eventually take my name and my heart. (Did I mention that everything in my life changed after meeting Max?!?)
So, here’s the question… who is your Paul? Do you have an experienced Christian brother or sister who is investing in your life? Encouraging you? Praying for you? Helping you to discover God’s purpose for your life? If so, let them know today how grateful you are for their eternal investment in your life! They are absolute game-changers. If you’re missing someone like that in your life, begin praying and seeking the Lord for someone to help guide and direct you in this next season. That prayer for Christian guidance is a prayer that Jesus loves to answer.
(Oh…and by the way…it’s been almost 30 years, but Max reached out to me this morning to encourage me and pray for me. Imagine how excited I was to tell him that my daughter, a Senior at LCA, is starting an FCA Bible study for some of the younger girls on her golf team… because after all, everyone needs a Paul!)
