A few days before Christmas one year, I read from Ezra 10:
And of Israel: Of the sons of Parosh: Ramiah, and Izziah, and Malchijah, and Mijamin, and Eleazer, and Malchijah, and Benaiah. And of the sons of Elam: Mattaniah, Zechariah, and Jehiel, and Abdi, and Jermoth, and Elijah…
(vv. 25-26)
-- and on it goes with a list of other interesting, unfamiliar, and difficult-to-pronounce names. On the other hand, names like Adam, Ashley, Doug, Brian, Ron, Meredith, Heather, etc. are ones you’re more inclined to hear on a regular basis.
God speaks to us anytime we open His word; so, even a list of such names can speak to you, as it did me.
Names are important to God, and the Bible confirms that God is the originator of names or naming if you will. In Genesis 2:7 we learn that God formed man – Adam. Then God tasked Adam with naming all the livestock, the birds in the sky and all the wild animals (Genesis 2:20). Even the name of each living creature is important to God. And when Adam set eyes on the woman God had chosen for him, he wasted no time and named her “woman” -- for she was taken out of man (Genesis 2:23b). We know her as Eve.
As this new year unfolds, I want you, the believer in Christ reading this, to know that God knows your name too. He knows you intimately, and He desires for you to know Him intimately too. Here are a few scripture verses I want you to reflect on as you walk with the Lord throughout this New Year:
“See, I have written your name on the palms of my hands.”
(Isaiah 49:16a, NLT)
Now this is what the Lord says – the One who created you, Jacob, and the One who formed you, Israel – “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name; you are Mine.”
(Isaiah 43:1, HCSB)
“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.” (Jeremiah 1:5, ESV)
And the Lord said to Moses, “I will do the very thing you have asked, because I am pleased with you and I know you by name.”
(Exodus 33:17, NIV)
“I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me.”
(John 10:14)
My dear brothers and sisters, may the year 2023 be your year to begin or continue an intimate walk with the Lord. He unequivocally knows your name. Let us diligently desire to know Him with a zeal that has no bounds.
