I travel to China on certain occasions for work. This requires boarding enormous planes with enormous wings. The fact that something this large can fly safely and consistently is amazing. I doubt many of the people reading this are aeronautical engineers and know all the details of what makes a plane fly. However, I think all of us know this simple fact: a plane with one wing won’t go far.
The same can be said when it comes to obeying Jesus’ command to “GO.” Just as a plane requires two wings to fly, faithfully following Jesus on mission requires us to do so with both our words and actions. If we share with our words but don’t display God’s love with our actions, our message rings hollow. If we perform loving actions but don’t verbally share the good news of Jesus, we may make lives more comfortable, but we won’t make disciples.
We see both of these aspects displayed in Jesus’ ministry. For example, Matthew 4:23 says And he went
throughout all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing
every disease and every affliction among the people.
So, let’s consider how serving plays a part in following Jesus on mission. In a world full of brokenness and need,
there are innumerable opportunities to serve others. At Immanuel, we offer many ways to get involved in our
community:
You may be hesitant to jump in because serving is hard. Well, you’re right. Serving those in need of the love of Jesus is not easy and can be messy. But it will be worth it. When we follow Jesus down the path of service, the joy He promises is our reward. I can testify to this through our foster care and adoption experience with our girls. We had very difficult, stressful days (and still do) but the joy they bring outweighs any cost paid.
So don’t let fear keep you from serving those in need. Freely share the love of Jesus; follow Him on the path of
service; and know the joy that comes from walking by faith and living generously. If you want more details on how to strengthen this wing of the “missions” plane, I am sure Jeff Story (jeffs@ibclex.com) can give you some ideas or you can stop by our Sending Center.
