Years ago, a young woman came to our church after being invited at a coffee shop. She was a self-proclaimed atheist, yet she continued to attend our Sunday gatherings and community group. Each time she showed up, she saw people in our faith family loving each other as Jesus loved us (Jn. 13:34-35). One week, she even commented how she had never seen so many different people in such different stages of life genuinely caring for each other like family. This young woman also signed up for an opportunity to serve the city with us, and was able to witness the church's joyful service to the community (Matt. 5:16).
One day, years later, my wife got a message from this young lady. Here is what it said:
Hi Jess! Lost your number, so I guess FB will have to do. Hope all of you are doing well! Miss your family like crazy! Just wanted to share some news with you…I have been saved! Jesus Christ is my Lord and Savior. Wanted to thank you and yours for the immense role you all played and thank you for the church. This could not have happened if it was not for the church!
My wife and I rejoiced at the news of this new sister in Christ! As I was thinking about her story recently, it reminded me that proximity often leads to proclamation. It usually takes someone being in close proximity to the church before proclaiming Christ as Lord and Savior--and by church, I do not mean a building! Our friend needed to see us loving each other as Christ loved us, being united in Christ regardless of our differences, worshipping God together on Sundays, and serving our city in tangible and sacrificial ways. When she experienced that, Jesus became unignorable in her life.
At The Mill, we strive to be a church where anyone can come as they are, no matter where they are on their spiritual journey, to discover and strengthen a relationship with Jesus. To do that, we must be a faith community where those far from God can "taste and see" His goodness amongst us in Christ (Ps. 34:8). You see, proximity to the church often leads to the proclamation of faith in the Gospel. So, prioritize the Sunday gathering, a weekly community group, and sacrificially and tangibly serving our city. Let us be a community where those who don't yet know Christ can come near to experience God's goodness and grace through his church.
