Who are you? This seems like a simple question, especially if asked during informal introductions. But this simple
question can have a profound impact on your life, if you go beyond the simple answer of your name. Consider these probing questions:
What are your passions?
What life experiences have shaped you?
What do you fear?
What are your dreams?
What are your talents and skills?
The list of questions you could ask to answer the simple question “Who are you?” could go on and on. At its core,
this simple question gets to your identity. What makes you, “you”?
Simon is confronted with his identity when he met Jesus. If you have read much of the New Testament, you are
probably familiar with Simon. He is a prominent character in many of Jesus’ stories, plays one of the most important roles in the early church, and writes two letters in the New Testament. At this point, you might think I am confusing Simon with someone else because this isn’t a name we are familiar with. To understand why, listen to his encounter with Jesus.
He (Andrew) first found his own brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which means
Christ). He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon the son of John. You shall
be called Cephas” (which means Peter). (John 1:41-42)
We are not familiar with Simon because he is known as Peter from this point forward. His encounter with Jesus
changed the answer to the simple question, “Who are you?” to more than just changing his name. This new name
was tied to a new identity. Peter means stone or rock, so it was fitting for Jesus to give this name to the disciple used to establish the church (Matthew 16:18).
Most of us don’t get new names when we start following Jesus. However, we all get a new identity. Jesus transforms our passions and dreams. He gives our talents and skills new purposes. He allows us to overcome fear. He becomes the filter through which we interpret all our life experiences. He makes us new (2 Corinthians 5:17).
Take a few moments to answer the question, “Who are you?” Consider how the reality of Jesus impacts that answer. If you don’t see how He has changed your life and identity, it is never too late to submit your life to Him.
