FOMO (fear of missing out) has existed throughout all generations. The rise of social media has made this even
more difficult to manage. Friends and influencers can present a nearly flawless life by selectively posting the perfect pictures and status updates. Though what is shared rarely captures reality, the FOMO in all of us can be triggered.
We should fight against FOMO for superficial things. However, there are some things, such as the birth of a child, we should do everything we can to not miss. At the top of the list of things we should fear missing out on is God’s
salvation, which is why I love the full sentence of John’s declaration of Jesus. “Behold, the Lamb of God, who
takes away the sin of the world!” (John 1:29b)
Jesus didn’t come to take away the sins of just the Jewish people. He didn’t come to rescue only those who
personally knew Him while He walked this earth. He didn’t come to save only the ‘good people.’ He came to take
away the sin of the world! What does this mean for us?
One, we don’t have to fear missing out on God’s salvation due to a lack of qualifications. Jesus came “for whoever believes in him” (John 3:16). His salvation is available to everyone regardless of skin color, nationality, status in life, or past sins.
Two, we don’t have to worry about missing the right religious activities for salvation; we just have to believe. John
makes this clear earlier in chapter 1: But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right
to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but
of God” (John 1:12).
Three, we don’t have to worry about losing God’s forgiveness. As “the Lamb of God,” Jesus entered once for all
into the holy places, not by means of goats and calves but by means of his own blood, thus securing an
eternal redemption” (Hebrews 9:12).
I love the phrase ‘once for all’ as it captures the finality and universal aspect of what Jesus accomplished for all who believe. We don’t have to fear missing out on God’s salvation; instead, we can worship Him for all He has done. It is often hard for us to express this worship, but I have found the song Once for All by City Alight helps me reflect on the finished work of “the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.” It is a great worship song – don’t miss out.
