Our brains all work a bit differently. My brain has always tended towards the analytical and less to the artistic side of life. That explains why I pursued engineering as my degree and career. Along the way, I have learned how to design parts and systems. Years of engineering knowledge have been passed down to establish certain principles we are wise to apply in our industry.
One of the most basic and obvious principles is this: every part and system has to have a definitive reference point. This allows everything to be properly dimensioned, measured, fit, and ultimately work together. A part or system without this simply will not work reliably.
Why do I bring this up? Because that principle also applies to our life. We were designed to live within an absolute point of reference, which means we can’t make up our own rules as we go -- at least not without negative consequences. One of the images the Bible uses for this absolute reference point is a cornerstone. Listen to what Peter says as he quotes the Old Testament and provides his own commentary:
“Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious, and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.” So the honor is for you who believe, but for those who do not believe, “The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.” (1 Peter 2:6-7)
The cornerstone was the starting point of any building in that time. It was the absolute reference everything was measured against. Jesus is the cornerstone of the church, meaning He is the both the foundation and standard bearer. Consider what great news this is.
When the world around us brings trials and storms, He is our foundation that will hold us through it all (Matthew 7:24-27). When the world around us wants to claim evil is good and good is evil, He is “the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6). When the world is confusing and dark, He is the light of the world who will give us the light of life (John 8:12). When the world accuses us of being evildoers (1 Peter 2:12), He is our righteousness (2 Corinthians 5:21). When it feels like life is crashing in on us, He is our refuge and strength (Psalm 46:1-3).
Jesus as our cornerstone is not just a nice theological idea. He is meant to be the foundation of our lives, our absolute point of reference. Whatever you are facing today, trust in Jesus as your firm foundation. He will not let you down.
