Scripture challenges us to walk as Christ did when He walked with His disciples. I often ask myself, “How am I doing on my Christ walk?” Working in state government for twenty years as a public sector attorney has posed challenges to my faith walk. Often, I focused on my low salary and envied the prestige of private sector attorneys. God has shown me that any Christ walk must embrace God's kind of contentment.
Scripture gives us insight about contentment:
Each person should live as a believer in whatever situation the Lord has assigned to them, just as God has called them. This is the rule I lay down in all the churches. (1 Cor. 7:17). Lest we think this applies only in church… Paul continues,
Brothers and sisters, in whatever condition each was called, there let him remain with God
(1 Cor. 7:24 ESV). Think of “remaining” as “focusing” on Him.
When you think about your situation/condition as God’s assignment, then one such situation is the work we do, our vocation. When we profess faith in God, shouldn’t we believe that God places us in our job? Shouldn’t we try to be content by remaining in Him while in our career?
Trying to embrace God’s contentment in my assigned condition and situation didn’t begin well. I often looked away from God to define “success” through the legal world’s lens. That definition of legal success would require mirroring great legal minds, astounding rich litigators and powerful political leaders. This world standard led envy and pride to reign where God should have reigned alone and supreme.
Fortunately, God was faithful in teaching me contentment in Him. Despite my obstinate objection, He kept me in an environment where He wanted me… where He would remain. I finally attempted to embrace God’s kind of contentment. That opened my eyes to real success focused on God. It led to many blessings: being a present, intentional, loving father for two daughters and a son; and a second chance for love with an amazing woman who sought God’s contentment with me (along with two bonus sons who call me dad). That’s pretty miraculous.
Once I embraced His real and true contentment, then where I worked, job title, salary amount didn’t matter. Those are just conditions and situations where I focus on God and include His purpose. When you embrace His kind of contentment, all you really need to do is remain in His love and patiently wait for His blessings.
In your normal workday, is there evidence of your walk with Christ? Does your life reflect that your focus is on God and your contentment is found in Him?
