Beyond Belief - Tuesday
And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow – not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below – indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 8:38-39)
One characteristic of the person who truly believes in Christ is that that believer can relax in His provision and in His love – confident in the One whose ways are higher than our ways.
Years ago, I met a wonderful pastor who was brought to Lexington from Maryland for a bone marrow transplant. I was connected with him and his family by one of my friends from college days who also lived in that state. I was honored to walk alongside that family as he had his bone marrow transplant. One day the doctor came in to speak with the family with an update. As I tried to ease out of the room, the family said, “Please stay.” The news was not good – he didn’t have long to live.
The pastor, who truly loved his flock, told the doctor he would like to go home and continue preaching; and because of his lack of immunity, he said he would let the elders in his church do the greeting and any handshaking that pastors normally do. The doctor grimaced and impressed upon him that his situation was much more serious than he knew.
It was at that point that this precious pastor looked straight into the eyes of the doctor with all the joy and confidence that a human being could possibly have and said, “I have always been in the palm of my Father’s hand – and I will continue to be in the palm of His hand whether it’s here with you all on earth – or with Him in heaven.”
“See, I have written your name on the palms of my hands…”
(Isaiah 49:16)
He was a true believer who knew the words of Romans 8 to be true – nothing could separate him from the love of God. His belief and his faith were alive and real, and his life was proclaiming, “I’m believing God!” And he was relaxing in the palm of His Father’s hand.
My question to you: Is your life accurately reflecting your “beyond the mere facts” belief? Is it screaming “I’m a train wreck!” or is it confidently declaring, “I’m believing God!” and relaxing in His care?
