Now to him who is able to do above and beyond all that we ask or think according to the power that works in us… (Ephesians 3:20)
In 2019 Head Coach Dabo Swinney led his Clemson Tigers to the College Football Championship. He was an unlikely hero – left by his alcoholic father when he was a teenager, homeless for a time, a walk-on at the University of Alabama – not particularly a “most likely to succeed” candidate. Yet there he was that night with another championship trophy.
When he was interviewed about the key to his success, one writer suggested that perhaps he was an overachiever. To that remark, he replied, “No. I’m an over-believer.” Let that sink in: He was an OVER-BELIEVER.
If we want to move on beyond belief in our spiritual life, I think we need to aspire to the title of over-believer. One who firmly believes in a more than we can ask or imagine God – one who believes God’s dreams for us are bigger than our dreams for ourselves – one who believes God is in control even when the situations or people in our world seem out of control.
An over-believer is not necessarily a genius or a Bible scholar – could be, but not a pre-requisite. An over-believer is not perfect – an over-believer knows that when we sin and ask forgiveness, God forgives, dusts us off, and tells us to move forward leaving that old stuff behind.
An over-believer wakes up each morning with “Good morning, God! What’s your plan for my day?” on his or her lips and a belief that God is firmly in control of the day that lies ahead.
This is the day the Lord has made – let us rejoice and be glad in it. (Psalm 118:24)
An over-believer goes to bed each night with a heart filled with gratitude to God for the blessings and opportunities that God placed in his or her path that day – rejoicing in the Lord as night falls and eyes close – all the while joyfully anticipating another new day in Christ.
When you lie down, your sleep will be sweet.
(Proverbs 3:24)
And in the in-between times, the time between rising in the morning and lying down at night, the over-believer embraces this truth:
So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.
(1 Corinthians 10:31)
I believe God wants this for all of us. Would you take a moment and ask God to help you become an over-believer? And if you have an under-believer on your heart, would you pray this prayer for that person too?
