“I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “… plans to give you a hope and a future.” (Jeremiah 29:11)
I had originally “planned” to be a high school Spanish teacher. But while I was in college at Union University, I went on a medical mission trip to Honduras. I was excited to work with the children; but when it came time for the trip, there were not enough Spanish speakers to interpret for the doctors, so I had to be “flexible” and go where needed. The medical clinic was not where I wanted to be, but it was there that I would meet a man who would change my life.
His name was Isidro Perez. He was an elderly man from a remote village in Honduras. He had never been to school a day in his life, he had no teeth, and you could tell he had lived a very hard life. He was dehydrated and weak. The doctor I was interpreting for was called away to help another patient. Isidro asked me if I was a doctor and if I could help him. I told him, “No, I’m so sorry, but the doctor will be back soon.”
Feeling helpless, the only thing I could do to comfort him while we waited was talk with him. So, I started talking with him about knowing Jesus. In Spanish, there are two verbs for “knowing.” One is more of a knowledge knowing (saber) and the other is a personal type of knowing (conocer). He was amazed that I was saying that I personally knew Jesus. He told me he only knew about Jesus in a knowledge sense. Somehow, between my book-Spanish and his village-Spanish, we were able to communicate, and he accepted Jesus as his Savior right there in that makeshift clinic.
I got to stay with him as he received IV fluids that afternoon. We talked more as he began to feel better. He told me he never had the opportunity to go to school, but he could tell that I had many opportunities. He told me he had come to the clinic that day to get “medicine for his body,” but had “also gotten medicine for his soul.” He told me I should become a doctor so I could tell people about Jesus. I told him I would!
God offered me a unique and life-changing opportunity to share Jesus in Honduras; and He is still offering me opportunities in my workplace as a dermatologist. He will do the same for you as you draw close to Him and stay open to His leadership – and His perfect plan.
