“For a child will be born for us, a son will be given to us, and the government will be on His
shoulders. He will be named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of
Peace” (Isaiah 9:6).
Have you ever had the pleasure of hearing a live choir sing this Scripture in the chorus of
“Handel’s Messiah?” What a blessing! Hearing trained voices in perfect pitch raising their praise
to God for His marvelous gift of Jesus gives us a glimpse of Heaven.
Isaiah prophesies that a child will be born FOR US, and a son will be given TO US. The people of
Israel were looking for a king to deliver them from their oppressors, but this is no ordinary king,
this is THE king who will reign on the throne of David forever (Isaiah 9:7). This child who is king
would be named Jesus because He will save His people from their sins (Matthew 1:21).
This child is God’s son, Jesus, the Messiah, the Savior of the world. The angel told the shepherds,
“…I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the city of David
a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord…” (Luke 2:10-11).
His name is Wonderful. He is great. He is miraculous. He is filled with wonder. He is beyond our
understanding. Jesus existed before time, He was with God and He was God (John 1:1-3). And
according to John 1:14, Jesus became flesh and took up residence among us. He is both God and
man, and He chose to give his life as a ransom for our sins (Mark 10:45).
For God loved the world in this way: He gave His One and Only Son, so that everyone who
believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:16) This is good news! We have
hope of eternity with God because of God’s great gift of Jesus, if we believe. But to all who did
receive Him, He gave them the right to be children of God, to those who believe in His name.
(John 1:12)
What are some of the words you would use to describe God and what He is to you?
If you have believed and received God’s incredible gift of Jesus into your heart and made Him
the Lord of your life, thank Him and praise Him for His great love and mercy. If you have not yet
taken this step of faith, today would be a great day.
