As I approach each new year, it has become a regular practice for me to pause and reflect on the year that is ending -- the lessons learned, the memories made, and even the failures experienced. It’s an opportunity to choose new goals, pray big prayers, and set new boundaries with hopes that the new year ahead will be one filled with joy.
As 2023 neared, I found myself reflecting on my year. It was a life-changing year, one filled with multiple cheerful moments and hard-fought lessons. So why was I feeling a considerable lack of joy? I had so many blessings in front of me! My job, my family, my community. All those things should be providing me a sustainable amount of joy; but somehow, I still felt empty.
In my reflections I realized that I had rooted my joy in the earthly blessings God had given me, instead of my eternal Father. While these things are wonderful, they still didn’t fill my soul with joy. I had lost perspective and forgotten to fix my eyes on the God of the universe! He who created me, saved me from my sins, and sustains me when life gets hard.
1 Peter 1:8-9 says,
Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls.
This reminds us that our joy is rooted in the salvation of Christ and the coming glory we will enter when we join Him in Heaven. It’s so easy to base our joy in the tangible things of this world and forget that Jesus chose us! We can wake up every day grateful for the coming glory and remind ourselves that life’s true joy is not found in our circumstances, nor in our earthly blessings, but instead in the foundation of our salvation through Jesus!
In challenging myself, I also want to challenge you to seek out joy in 2023. Joy that is found in a growing knowledge of Christ and a deeper love for what He has done for us. Take an internal look and ponder whether your joy is rooted in the earthly blessings you have or in the knowledge of what Christ has done for you.
When life’s challenges come, we rejoice in our love for Jesus, knowing that where we’re headed is far greater than anything this earth could offer.
