Now the word of the LORD came to Jonah son of Amittai, saying, “Get up! Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it, because its wickedness has come up before Me.” Jonah, however, got up to flee to Tarshish, away from the presence of the LORD. He went down to Joppa and found a ship bound for Tarshish. So he paid the fare and went aboard to sail for Tarshish, away from the presence of the LORD. (Jonah 1:1-3 ESV)
God’s assignment for Jonah was to preach to the Ninevites, warning them of the judgement that was to come. Jonah faced a crisis of belief and decided to disobey. In fact, he ran in the opposite direction. He knew that God would spare the Ninevites from judgement if they repented, and he thought the Ninevites deserved whatever was coming to them (Jonah 4:1-2).
When Jonah faced a crisis of belief, he ran to Joppa where he found a ship headed to Tarshish. I wonder if Jonah breathed a sigh of relief. After all, he had found a way of escape and had not faced any immediate judgement. What Jonah didn’t realize was that God had made provision for the boat, along with a fierce storm and a big fish.
Perhaps you’ve heard God’s call, faced a decision that required faith, and decided not to follow. Your reason for ignoring God’s call may not be as stark as Jonah’s; it might even seem like a reasonable decision. But your choice to disobey will not thwart God’s purpose; it will come with consequences. Just as He pursued Jonah with a boat, a storm, and a fish, God will pursue you until He brings you in line with His purpose.
Where or what is your Nineveh? Where has God called you to go, or what is it He has called you to do that you would not have chosen for yourself? If you are running from the call of God, don’t get on the boat. You can’t run fast enough, and the boat can’t sail far enough to escape God’s pursuit.
