But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of
greed, because these are improper for God’s holy people. Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk
or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving. For of this you can be sure: No
immoral, impure or greedy person—such a person is an idolater—has any inheritance in the kingdom
of Christ and of God. (Ephesians 5:3-5)
Yesterday we learned that imperatives are the commands of the Bible, whereas indicatives are the
promises of the Bible. When we mix up the imperatives and the indicatives, we end up putting God’s
commands before His promises. This is legalism -- an attempt to use our moral performance to earn
God’s favor -- an attempt to use commands to earn the promises. It’s a false gospel because none of us
can be good enough to earn God’s favor.
So… in the text above, let’s look at the imperatives and the indicatives, the commands and the promises.
It’s easy to get overwhelmed with all the imperatives. We are commanded to abstain from sexual
immorality, greed, obscenity, foolish talk, or coarse joking. Paul even raises the bar by saying “not even a
hint of these should be among us.” Yikes! And there’s one more imperative: instead of sexual immorality
and greed, our lives should be marked by thanksgiving or gratitude.
What about the indicatives or promises in this passage? Although subtle, they form the foundation for
all the challenging commands given. The first promise is that we are “God’s holy people.” Paul is making
a major assumption -- he believes he is writing to “God’s Holy people.” He is telling God’s Holy People to
STOP their sexual impurity, greed, obscenity, and coarse joking because that’s inconsistent with who
they ALREADY are because of what happened back in Ephesians 2:8 where they were saved by GRACE
and not of moral performance so that “no one may boast.”
The second promise is an “inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.” So, keeping the promises
before the commands, Paul is saying to the Ephesian believers and to us: BECAUSE you have been made
Holy through Christ and BECAUSE you will inherit the kingdom of Christ and of God, abstain from sexual
immorality, foolish talk, or coarse joking because that is not who you are.
When you look in the mirror, do you see a sinner who struggles to obey, or do you see a saint who
struggles with sin? There is a major difference. Your identity fuels your behavior just as God’s promises
fuel His commands. Live out who God says you are!
